Abstract

Spray cooler is having extensive application in high altitude test facility for cooling high temperature rocket exhaust gases. The cooling effect is obtained by spraying liquid droplets into a hot gas stream. A 3D model of the spray cooler is also considered for the numerical investigations in the present paper. The result of droplets vaporization is examined which is coupled with the changes in the droplets and in the surrounding gas conditions. A plain orifice type atomizer is used to inject the water particles as a fine spray. The overall water flow is divided equally among all the orifices and water mass flow rate per orifice is prescribed as the boundary condition. Grid sensitivity for the numerical predictions has investigated with number of cells ranging from 50,000 to 100,000. In this paper an analysis reveals that the evaporation of water particles depends on various factors like droplet size, length of the gas cooler, distribution of water mass, injection velocity, etc. It is also found that the use of liquid sprays as a rapid cooling process for a hot gas discharge is quite effective.
